CreateAthon DC 2024 occurred on November 16-17 at Steampunk’s creative studio in McLean, VA. During this 24-hour hackathon, 25 local creatives and strategists completed pro bono projects for 5 local nonprofits.
How It Started

Final Presentations
By 8 a.m. on November 17th, breakfast was waiting for teams as they prepared to post their final presentations online. While teams submitted their projects, Design Thinking Lead John Phillips, Steampunk, prepared them for a ‘Rose, Bud, Thorn’ activity. This activity allowed teams to share things they loved about the event, from the food down to event linguistics, as well as things they felt could be improved and suggestions for future events. After sharing insights as a group, teams regrouped to prepare for presentations. Around 8:45 a.m., nonprofit representatives began arriving to take their seats. A palpable excitement filled the room as teams prepared to share their 24-hour creations. Sleep-deprived, they presented their deliverables, each slide met with applause and admiration.
CreateAthon DC, AIGA DC’s flagship program, once again proved the incredible power of creative collaboration. In a 24-hour burst of innovation, volunteers from diverse backgrounds came together to design innovative solutions for local nonprofits. In just one day, they made a significant impact, demonstrating the potential of design to drive positive change. We are grateful for the dedication and talent of our volunteers and look forward to the next CreateAthon DC.
