CreateAthon DC 2023 Summary and Impact

CreateAthon DC 2023 occurred on April 29-30 at Steampunk’s creative studio in McLean, VA. During this 24-hour hackathon, 30 local creatives and strategists completed pro bono projects for 5 local nonprofits.

How It Started

On the morning of April 29, 30 local professionals arrived at the event with their computers, snacks, and gear for staying overnight. After a short presentation, they broke into their teams and got to work.

Nonprofits and Projects

  • Perry School Community Services Center: Rebrand, including logo and swag designs. Poster design for the legacy series template design.
  • Homeaid National Capital Region: CareDay branding and marketing templates, including tagline creation, social media templates, t-shirt design, and sign design.
  • Roots for Life: Branding update including a logo refresh, color palette, Canva social media templates, letterhead, and business cards.
  • The Oasis Alliance: Expanding brand standards and assets, social media templates and content, t-shirt design, and email headers.
  • Ansar Services of Greater Washington DC: An awareness (and marketing) campaign to reach our target audiences, marketing material (traditional print & online), and potentially a strategy and plan to use social media effectively.

Final Presentations

By 8 a.m. on April 30th, breakfast was waiting for teams as final presentations were posted online. Around 8:30 a.m., nonprofit representatives started arriving to take their seats. There was an air of quiet excitement as the teams began to review their project work and share what they created over the last 24 hours. Sleep-deprived teams shared their deliverables slide by slide and earned applause as they proudly took their seats.

View Some of the Project Work Created During the Event

CreateAthon is one of AIGA DC’s flagship programs. We are constantly amazed at the work that creatives can do in the 24-hour timespan, and we’re motivated by the impact that our designers can have in such a short amount of time. This year’s volunteers were able to meet other creative professionals in the area and make an impact not only for a local nonprofit but for the people that each nonprofit serves. We want to thank all the volunteers who donated their time and skills to this year’s CreateAthon DC, and we look forward to the next one.
