Join the DC Design Week Committee

Help Celebrate DC Design!

No matter what, DC Design Week is happening this year. It’s been a long year already, and when we get to September, we’re going to need to celebrate. And we want you to help us make it the best it can be by joining the committee that puts it all together.

This year, we’re fighting back against the perception that DC is a boring, political swamp by amplifying and celebrating the creatives who call our city and region home. Just like every year, we’ll be hosting fun parties, informative panels, and interactive workshops.

If you’ve gone to a DC Design Week event before — like our live recording with Debbie Millman, our creative lunch at NASA, or our kick-off party with Shaolin Jazz — and asked yourself how it happens, now’s the chance to find out. We’re recruiting for a number of positions to help make DC Design Week 2020 the best one yet, and we think you could be the perfect fit.

Joining the DC Design Week Committee is the perfect opportunity to grow both as a professional and give back to our community. You’ll be able to learn new skills, develop leadership experiences, and build your network. But you’ll also be spending your time providing something really amazing for the designers and artists in our region: a week-long celebration of all of us. As an added bonus, committee-members gain access to every event for free!

If you’re interested in joining the committee, register to join us at a virtual information session from 7:00 – 8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 12 and learn more about open positions at dc.aiga.org.

Who We're Looking For

DC Design Week is planned by a group of dedicated volunteers. We plan, market, and execute more than 30 events in DC, Maryland, and Virginia (though this year, some or all may be virtual). It takes a lot of time, energy, and commitment.

This is a five month commitment, running from the beginning of May through the end of September, and much of it is a sprint. Our committee will have a mandatory full day kick-off (on a weekend), and each team will have regularly scheduled check-ins. We’re primarily looking for people who are collaborative, clear in communication, flexible, patient, responsible, and accountable.

You needn’t be a designer, but an interest in celebrating our creative community is a must. It's important to our chapter that the DC Design Week volunteer committee be diverse and representative of the DC design community. We aim to have a committee with diversity in industry, age, gender, professional experience, race, background, education, income, physical ability and more. However, applicants are not required to offer this information. All are truly welcome.

We’re specifically looking for the following open roles:

  • Project Manager. You are a planner extraordinaire. You know how complicated product launches or large events are, and you thrive in getting to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s to make sure they happen without a hitch. You are excellent at prioritization, communication, and holding teams accountable. This position is on the executive team.
  • Communications Director. All you want in the world is concise language and to tell a consistent story. You have a passion for figuring out how all our different communications channels can work together to tell our brand story, sell tickets, and extend the reach of our events. This position manages the communications team and is on the executive team.
  • Social Media Chair. You always find the perfect Giphy stickers for your Instagram Stories. Your catchphrase is “link in bio.” You live for stories that can be told in 280 characters (like this). Most importantly, you know how to adapt key messaging and design engaging content for social platforms.
  • Copywriter. You don’t just know how to translate abstract brand traits into a clear and compelling tone of voice, but this is what gives you life. You love finding new ways to convey the same concepts to make sure content is never stale. And your attention to detail is second to none, you even found the comma splice in this description.
  • Event Lead. You are detail-oriented and creative. You’re ready to take on conceiving of, planning, and executing some of the events that fill our calendar during DC Design Week. Depending on your interest, this role could include planning just one big, high-profile event or managing multiple smaller — but still amazing — events.
