2013 HOW Conference presenters Scott Kirkwood and Annie Riker of the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association, discuss pivotal in-house steps they took to rebrand NPCA.

Campfire Stories: Transforming In-House Design at the National Parks Conservation Association

Eight years ago, the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association had a tired magazine, a dated annual report, mediocre newsletters, and a logo that time had forgotten. Today, NPCA’s print publications regularly win awards from HOW Magazine and FOLIO—but more importantly, they’re inspiring park lovers to get more engaged, influencing decision-makers, and generating results. Join Scott Kirkwood and Annie Riker—leaders of NPCA’s small in-house team—as they discuss the dozens of pivotal “baby steps” that transformed NPCA into a well-branded organization whose design is worthy of its mission. Learn how they successfully expanded their staff, increased their budget, introduced helpful new procedures, and persuaded their coworkers to value design as a vital ingredient in the organization’s day-to-day work.

About the presenters:
Annie Riker has considered herself a designer ever since she was old enough to hold a paintbrush. She received her BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design and further developed her creative skills at ChaseDesign, Inc. and Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group. In 2010, she realized her passion for nonprofits that aligned with her own personal values, which led her to become the in-house designer for NPCA, where her design work has earned her recognition from HOW and FOLIO.

Scott Kirkwood began his publishing career editing coupon books (yes, coupon books) but ever since moving to Washington, DC, in 1994 he’s been writing and editing for nonprofit organizations including the Humane Society of the United States and the Child Welfare League of America. He’s now the senior director of publications for the National Parks Conservation Association, which means he goes to amazing places, writes about fascinating subjects, and looks at lots of pretty pictures.
