Join us for Jazz & Juice, a celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month where music meets design in a way that hits deeper. Curated by Charvis Campbell (Home Rule Records) and Todd Threats (Studio T68), and moderated by Aaron Myers (Executive Director, DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities), this immersive evening explores how album cover art becomes the gateway to discovering music, and vice versa.
During the event, Charvis and Todd will each present five jazz albums whose artwork and visual design pulled them in before the first note ever played. Through conversation and curated listening, they’ll break down the connection between visual design and the sonic experience, revealing how great design can make you hear things differently, and how great music can make you see the world through a completely new lens.
About Charvis Campbell (Curator)
Charvis is a lifelong purveyor of records and D.C. music paraphernalia. A proud Howard University alum, he is the President of the Home Rule Music and Film Preservation Foundation, a DC based non-profit who has a mission to support, promote and preserve DC music, film and culture. His organization produced the award-winning film, Black Fire: The Documentary, about the DC based Black independent jazz record label from the 1970’s. He also owns HR Records, a rare vinyl record store in DC. You may recall HR Records as the store the former Vice President Kamala Harris visited when she decided to add a few albums to her record collection.
As Charvis puts it: “I think music is one of those not only healing, but connecting forces in the universe.”
About Todd Threats (Curator)
Todd is a visionary design leader with over 15 years of experience in delivering brand strategy and visual solutions for mission-based businesses and established entrepreneurs. His design agency, Studio T68, is deeply committed to creating work that not only meets the highest creative standards but also drives meaningful change for his clients. He’s an avid record collector who spent his formative years listening to everything he could find in the aisles of record shops.
As Todd says, “my many years of music retail management, music curation, and performance deejaying has uniquely informed my design career more than anything.”
A proud Howard University alum, Todd lives in DC with his wife, two kids, the family dog and those thousands of record albums.
About Aaron Myers (Moderator)
Aaron Myers is a DC-based artist with a deep understanding of the city’s cultural landscape and its diverse communities. He has been an active member of the DC arts community for more than a decade, serving as the Artist-in-Residence at the Black Fox Lounge, Mr. Henry’s Restaurant, The Eaton and performing at venues across the city. He is the founding Board Chair of the Capitol Hill Jazz Foundation, serves on the Board of Governors of the DC Recording Academy and has been recognized for his work in arts education.
As Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Myers oversees the agency’s efforts to support and promote the arts in the District of Columbia. This includes managing grant programs, public art installations, and cultural events that celebrate the city’s vibrant arts scene
